Boston Twp., MI (April 28, 2025) – Saturday evening, April 26, a tragic chain-reaction crash involving a semitrailer and eight other vehicles resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to several others on Interstate 96 in Ionia County.

The Michigan State Police responded to the scene just after 6:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near Mile Marker 59. According to officials, traffic had been halted due to an active construction zone when a semitrailer failed to stop and plowed into the line of waiting vehicles. An 80-year-old man from Okemos lost his life as a result of the collision. Multiple other individuals sustained injuries, although their exact conditions have not yet been made public.

Due to the severity of the crash, the highway was closed for hours as authorities investigated and worked to clear the wreckage. The Michigan Department of Transportation confirmed that all eastbound lanes reopened shortly after midnight. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim and hope for the quick recovery of those injured.

Truck Accidents in Michigan

Truck accidents in Michigan are often among the most catastrophic incidents on the roadways. In 2022, Michigan reported over 14,000 crashes involving large trucks, many resulting in significant injuries or fatalities. Construction zones, in particular, create conditions where drivers must exercise heightened caution. Unfortunately, when drivers of large vehicles are inattentive or fail to stop in time, the results can be tragic for everyone involved.

Accidents involving large trucks often lead to serious injuries. Here’s a look at common injuries victims may suffer:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): The force of a collision with a heavy truck can cause serious brain injuries. Victims might experience cognitive impairments that impact their ability to work or enjoy life.
  • Severe Lacerations: Shattered glass, crushed metal, and debris during a crash often result in deep cuts and lacerations that may require extensive medical care and leave permanent scars.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Truck collisions can damage the spinal cord, sometimes leading to partial or full paralysis. Even less severe spinal injuries can cause long-term pain and mobility issues.
  • Multiple Bone Fractures: The violent impact often results in fractures to arms, legs, ribs, and other bones, necessitating surgeries and long recoveries.
  • Internal Injuries: Collisions can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding or organ damage, requiring immediate surgical intervention.
  • Emotional Trauma: Survivors of severe truck accidents may deal with PTSD, anxiety, and depression long after the physical wounds have healed.
