Detroit, MI - One Hurt in House Explosion on McCormick St

Detroit, MI (July 6, 2025) – Fire crews rushed to the scene of a house explosion on Detroit’s east side Saturday afternoon, July 5. The incident occurred at approximately 3:49 p.m. in the 19400 block of McCormick Street near Moross Road and Interstate 94. Neighbors reported feeling their homes shake as debris and air conditioning units were blown into the streets. Fire officials confirmed that one person was injured in the explosion and was transported for medical care.

According to the Detroit Fire Department, the blast damaged the homes on either side of the property where the explosion originated. Thankfully, no one was inside those neighboring houses at the time. However, all three homes have been deemed uninhabitable due to the extent of the damage. Utility provider DTE has shut off power and gas to ensure safety while investigators work to determine the cause of the explosion.

We hope the individual injured in this incident recovers quickly.

House Explosions and Fires in Michigan

Detroit, MI - One Hurt in House Explosion on McCormick StAccidents involving house explosions and residential fires are tragic events that can change lives in an instant. Here in Michigan, fire departments respond to hundreds of structure fires every year, many of which are caused by gas leaks, faulty wiring, or appliance malfunctions. It’s vital for homeowners to have functioning smoke detectors, be aware of unusual odors, and conduct regular maintenance on gas and electrical systems to reduce the risk of such devastating events.

Understanding how to protect your family and home starts with knowing common causes and safety measures:

  • Gas Leaks: Natural gas leaks are one of the leading causes of residential explosions. Regular inspections and being alert to signs like rotten egg smells can help prevent accidents.
  • Faulty Appliances: Older appliances may have worn-out wiring or gas connections. Routine servicing can keep them operating safely and reduce fire hazards.
  • Electrical Issues: Overloaded circuits or faulty wiring can spark fires that spread rapidly. Homeowners should hire licensed electricians for inspections and repairs.
  • Blocked Vents and Chimneys: Blockages can cause dangerous buildups of gas or carbon monoxide. Annual cleanings and checks are a must for safe operation.
  • Homeowner Preparedness: Having a fire escape plan, working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and knowing how to shut off utilities can make a life-saving difference during emergencies.
