Bicycle Accidents in Michigan
Both motorists and cyclists in Michigan need to be aware of their rights, given the growing number of bicycles on our state’s roads. Although the cycling scene in our state is thriving and expanding, rider safety still lags behind. In fact, more than 70% of bicycle accidents in Michigan happen during the day, indicating that many drivers are either not paying attention or acting recklessly behind the wheel.
Moreover, motorists and cyclists are equally responsible for properly observing traffic signals and signage. Some local governments have traffic control measures or laws prohibiting riding on sidewalks. Moreover, the same rights and obligations that apply to pedestrians utilizing sidewalks and crosswalks also apply to cyclists.
Still, driver distraction and inattention continue to plague bicyclists throughout Michigan. These are the most typical causes of bicycle accidents across our state:
- Excessive speed or otherwise disobeying traffic signs or signals
- Unlawful turns (typically right turns with a bike on the right side and left turns at junctions)
- Driver distraction, such as texting while driving
- Disregarding designated bike lanes or driving through crosswalks, sidewalks, and bicycle paths
Sadly, crosswalks are among the most frequent locations for bicycle accidents, and a driver runs a serious risk of striking and injuring a cyclist if they do not slow down or yield. Other times, a driver turns onto a street without looking, hitting a cyclist crossing the street legally.
