Vehicle Accidents in Michigan
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every 10 to 15 seconds, an automotive accident takes place somewhere in the United States. It’s no surprise that vehicle accidents are the leading cause of personal injury litigation in today’s courts, given the abysmal national and Michigan-specific collision statistics.
Insurance companies in Michigan often do not determine who was at fault in an accident due to “no-fault” insurance. First-party benefits (monetary damages) and non-monetary losses (such as pain and suffering) are both recoverable in a lawsuit against the culpable party.
Even if you believe your injuries are minor and the situation is straightforward, you should still see a lawyer if you’ve been in a car accident. While it’s understandable that victims might be concerned about paying for legal representation, studies have shown that plaintiffs whose counsel defends them actually get larger payouts. Most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they don’t get paid until their client does.
In many situations, it would be beneficial to have legal representation. Your lawyer may act as your representative in all interactions with insurers and other parties. Your attorney will investigate all of your options to determine who is at fault in an accident and why you should be compensated. Interviewing potential witnesses and collecting relevant information are two steps in this approach.
