Car Accidents in Michigan
Motor vehicle accidents remain a significant issue throughout Michigan. According to Michigan State Police statistics, more than 290,000 crashes occurred statewide in 2023 alone. Many of these incidents result in injuries, property damage, and lasting emotional effects for those involved.
Following a crash, it’s essential to understand the steps you can take to protect yourself and your rights.
Here’s what to do immediately after a car accident:
- Check for Injuries: Always check yourself and others for injuries first. Seek medical attention immediately if anyone is hurt, even if injuries seem minor at first.
- Move to Safety: If possible, move vehicles to a safe area away from traffic. If vehicles cannot be moved, turn on hazard lights and stay in a safe place.
- Call 911: It’s important to report the accident to authorities. Police can document the scene, which is helpful for any insurance or legal claims later.
- Exchange Information: Get the other driver’s name, contact details, insurance information, and vehicle details. This information will be crucial when filing a claim.
- Document the Scene: Take photos of vehicle damage, license plates, road conditions, and any visible injuries. These photos can serve as vital evidence.
- Seek Medical Attention: Even if you feel fine, some injuries may not be immediately apparent. A prompt medical evaluation can ensure injuries are properly diagnosed and treated.
