Newton Township, MI (August 8, 2023) - Two persons were killed in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 2 at Highway 33 in Newton Township early Tuesday morning, August 8, according to the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies from the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office responded to the car accident at about 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Following the collision, authorities discovered that both vehicles had veered off the roadway and into different ditches. Both the eastbound and westbound vehicles were stuck on the side of the highway, trapping three individuals inside.
Both drivers were reportedly declared deceased at the scene by responding deputies. Officials added that a female passenger was initially treated for serious injuries at a nearby hospital before being moved to Marquette General Hospital.
Speed appears to be a factor in the collision, though Mackinac County deputies are still investigating at this time. The Michigan State Police, Portage Township Fire Department, Garfield Township Fire Department, and Portage EMS all assisted in the on-scene inquiry.
We would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the deceased victims' families. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their loved ones in hopes of their complete recovery.
