Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI – Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Plymouth RdPedestrian fatalities are a growing concern in Michigan. The state records hundreds of pedestrian-involved accidents each year, many resulting in severe or fatal injuries. Urban areas, crosswalks, and high-traffic roadways often see the highest number of these incidents.

Understanding the risks can help prevent tragic accidents. Some common causes of pedestrian crashes include:

  • Failure to Yield – Some drivers fail to stop or slow down for pedestrians at crosswalks or intersections, even when it’s legally required. This can result in dangerous collisions, putting pedestrians at serious risk of injury or even death.
  • Poor Visibility – Many pedestrian accidents occur during nighttime or in areas where there is inadequate street lighting. Poor visibility makes it harder for drivers to spot pedestrians, especially if they are wearing dark clothing or crossing suddenly.
  • Speeding – Driving at high speeds not only reduces a driver’s reaction time but also increases the force of impact during a collision. This significantly raises the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities for pedestrians involved in these incidents.
  • Distracted Driving – When drivers are distracted by phones, navigation systems, or other in-car activities, their ability to notice pedestrians is greatly reduced. They may only see a pedestrian at the last moment—or not at all—leading to potentially devastating consequences.
  • Roadway Design – Poorly designed roads that lack essential pedestrian infrastructure, such as crosswalks, sidewalks, or pedestrian signals, create environments where pedestrians are at higher risk of accidents. Inadequate signage or unclear markings can further compound the problem.
