Lawrence Twp., MI – Child Killed in Amish Buggy Crash on CR 215

Lawrence Twp., MI (March 28, 2025) – A tragic crash involving an Amish buggy and an SUV claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl and critically injured a 12-year-old boy on Wednesday morning, March 26, in Van Buren County.

The collision happened around 8:00 a.m. along County Road 215 near 60th Avenue in Lawrence Township. According to Michigan State Police, the two children were riding in the buggy when it was rear-ended by an SUV. The force of the impact killed the young girl at the scene and left the boy in critical condition. The horse pulling the buggy also died in the crash.

Authorities said the driver of the SUV, a 31-year-old woman from Mattawan, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an unknown substance. She and two passengers in her vehicle were not injured. The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement continues to gather evidence and determine the full circumstances of the crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the child who lost her life and hope the young boy makes a full recovery.

Buggy and Rural Road Accidents in Michigan

Lawrence Twp., MI – Child Killed in Amish Buggy Crash on CR 215Michigan’s rural roads are home to many communities that rely on non-motorized forms of transportation, including Amish buggies. Unfortunately, these slower-moving vehicles are particularly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles. While Michigan has thousands of miles of scenic rural routes, crashes involving buggies often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protection for riders.

These incidents highlight several key concerns when it comes to rural road safety:

  • Limited Visibility: Horse-drawn buggies are lower to the ground and move at much slower speeds than cars or trucks. When drivers are distracted or impaired, they may not notice a buggy until it’s too late—especially on winding country roads or during early morning hours.
  • Driver Impairment: Operating under the influence continues to be a deadly factor on Michigan roads. Impaired drivers are less likely to notice slower-moving traffic or respond in time to avoid a crash. These situations often result in catastrophic outcomes, particularly when vulnerable road users are involved.
  • Lack of Barrier Protection: Unlike cars, buggies offer no seat belts, airbags, or crash-resistant structures. A collision that might result in minor injuries in a vehicle can be fatal in a buggy, especially for children.
  • Animal Involvement: Crashes involving buggies also often result in the death or injury of the horses pulling them. This adds to the emotional toll for the families involved and can deeply affect the surrounding community.
  • Speed Differentials: Rural roads often lack wide shoulders or designated buggy lanes, meaning that fast-moving vehicles must share the same space. These differences in speed increase the risk of rear-end collisions, especially if the motorist is not paying full attention.
