Lansing, MI (April 3, 2025) - On April 1, an afternoon crash in Okemos left a female pedestrian injured after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Campus Hill Drive, according to the Meridian Township Police Department.

Officers were dispatched following reports that a pedestrian had been hit while crossing the road. When emergency crews arrived, they found the injured woman lying in the roadway as bystanders attempted to assist her. Paramedics transported the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her current condition has not been confirmed.

The vehicle involved did not remain at the scene. Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in locating what is believed to be a 2017 to 2020 Ford Escape with heavy damage to the front end. The vehicle was last seen heading eastbound on Hamilton Road at a high rate of speed behind the Playmakers store. Law enforcement officials blocked portions of Grand River Avenue and Park Lake Road during the investigation.  These investigations into the crash are ongoing.

We hope the individual hurt in this incident recovers fully and quickly.

Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Lansing, MI - Pedestrian Injured in Hit-and-Run on Grand River AveIn Michigan, pedestrian-related accidents continue to be a serious issue across urban and suburban areas alike. According to the Michigan State Police, over 1,500 pedestrians are injured annually, with a significant number of those crashes involving hit-and-run drivers. Unfortunately, many of these accidents result in life-changing injuries or fatalities due to the vulnerability of those traveling on foot.

When it comes to pedestrian accidents, there are a few common causes and circumstances that frequently play a role. Here are some key points worth understanding:

  • Distracted Driving: Drivers using mobile phones or otherwise not paying attention to the road are a significant factor in pedestrian crashes. A momentary distraction can fail to notice someone crossing the street, especially in areas with crosswalks or traffic signals.
  • Speeding Vehicles: Higher speeds increase both the likelihood of hitting a pedestrian and the severity of injuries sustained. In many cases, vehicles traveling above the posted limit are unable to react in time when someone enters the roadway.
  • Failure to Yield: Drivers not yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks or at intersections is a persistent issue. Even with marked pedestrian crossings, some drivers disregard the right-of-way, leading to serious incidents.
  • Low Visibility Conditions: Crashes often occur during early morning or late evening hours when visibility is reduced. Dim lighting, bad weather, and pedestrians wearing dark clothing can all contribute to these collisions.
  • Hit-and-Run Scenarios: When drivers flee the scene, it delays medical treatment and complicates legal accountability. These situations add emotional distress for the victims and make the investigative process more difficult for authorities.
