Car Accidents in Michigan

Saginaw, MI – Injuries Reported in Crash on I-675 Near MM 2Highway crashes are a common occurrence in Michigan, especially on busy roadways like Interstate 675. In 2022, Michigan recorded over 282,000 motor vehicle crashes statewide, many of which took place on interstates and high-speed corridors. These crashes often result in serious injuries due to the force and speed involved.

When dealing with an accident, understanding the insurance process is essential. Here are several things to know about how insurance works after a crash:

  • No-Fault Coverage: Michigan is a no-fault insurance state. This means that, regardless of who caused the accident, your own insurance typically covers your medical bills and lost wages. However, there are exceptions for severe injuries.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): PIP is a required part of auto insurance in Michigan. It helps pay for medical care, lost income, and certain replacement services. The amount of coverage depends on the policy you selected.
  • Mini-Tort Coverage: If your vehicle is damaged and the other driver is at fault, Michigan’s mini-tort law may allow you to collect up to $3,000 from the at-fault driver’s insurance to cover repair costs not paid by your insurer.
  • Lawsuits for Serious Injuries: In cases of permanent disfigurement, serious impairment of body function, or death, victims can step outside of the no-fault system and file a liability claim or lawsuit against the at-fault driver.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: This optional coverage protects you if the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough to cover your losses. It can be a vital safeguard for more serious accidents.
