Car Accidents in Michigan

Flint, MI - Crash at N Dort Hwy & Stewart Ave Leaves InjuriesIn Michigan, auto collisions are a daily occurrence. According to data from the Michigan State Police, hundreds of car accidents happen every day—ranging from minor fender-benders to serious crashes with major injuries. From icy winter roads to busy intersections, the risk of injury remains high throughout the year.

Understanding what might cause a crash is one way to be more cautious on the roads. Here are several common causes of accidents across the state:

  • Distracted Driving: Texting, talking on the phone, or adjusting the radio can pull attention away from the road for even just a few seconds—but that's enough to cause a crash. Drivers who are not fully focused may miss signs, signals, or changes in traffic patterns, increasing the likelihood of a collision.
  • Speeding: Driving above the speed limit or too fast for road conditions greatly increases both the chances of an accident and the severity of resulting injuries. Speeding reduces reaction time and makes it harder to stop when necessary.
  • Failure to Yield or Stop: Running red lights, ignoring stop signs, or not yielding to oncoming traffic are all frequent causes of crashes at intersections. These situations often lead to T-bone accidents, which are particularly dangerous.
  • Impaired Driving: Operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol can severely affect judgment, coordination, and awareness. Even small amounts of impairment increase the risk of making fatal decisions behind the wheel.
  • Poor Weather Conditions: Snow, rain, fog, and ice all pose additional risks for drivers in Michigan. Slick roads and reduced visibility make it harder to control a vehicle, especially if the driver is speeding or following too closely.
