Webberville, MI – One Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-96

Webberville, MI (April 13, 2025) – A tragic wrong-way crash on Friday, April 11, claimed the life of a man from Washington State and left two others hospitalized. The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office reported that the accident took place shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Interstate 96, near the Williamston Road area.

Deputies had been dispatched to investigate reports of a vehicle heading east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 96. Within minutes, that vehicle collided with another car near Wallace Road. Authorities confirmed that the wrong-way driver, a 25-year-old man from Livingston County, struck a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old man from Washington. A 23-year-old woman, also from Washington, was a passenger in the car.

The man from Washington was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the female passenger and the Livingston County driver sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. According to law enforcement, both are expected to recover. The wrong-way driver was later taken into custody. Officials say criminal charges are being considered as the investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our condolences to the family of the victim and wish the injured a full recovery.

Car Accidents in Michigan

Webberville, MI – One Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-96Michigan consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of vehicle crashes. In one recent year alone, there were over 293,000 crashes, with more than 51,000 involving injuries. Wrong-way driving is one of the most dangerous behaviors on the road and often results in serious or fatal injuries due to the high-speed, head-on nature of the collisions.

This crash highlights a very real concern: the danger of wrong-way driving. Here’s a deeper look at what makes these accidents so serious:

  • High-Speed Impact: Wrong-way collisions often happen on highways where speed limits are higher. When two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide at high speeds, the resulting force is multiplied—leading to catastrophic damage and life-threatening injuries.
  • Reduced Reaction Time: Drivers don’t typically anticipate vehicles coming toward them on the same side of the road, giving them little to no time to react. This limited reaction time means it’s harder to avoid a collision once a wrong-way driver is spotted.
  • Impairment as a Factor: Many wrong-way crashes involve impaired driving. Alcohol and drugs can significantly affect judgment and coordination, leading drivers to enter ramps or lanes incorrectly and continue traveling in the wrong direction.
  • Nighttime Incidents: These crashes frequently occur in the early morning or late-night hours, when visibility is lower and fewer drivers are on the road to alert authorities. This increases the time a wrong-way driver may travel before being stopped.
  • Increased Fatality Rates: Statistically, wrong-way crashes result in a higher percentage of fatalities compared to other crash types. The direct, head-on nature of the collision leaves little room for survival, even with safety features like airbags and seat belts.
