Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Saginaw, MI - Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle at Atwater & Washington AveIn Michigan, pedestrian accidents are an ongoing concern, especially in urban and high-traffic areas. In 2023, state officials reported over 1,700 pedestrian-involved crashes, many of which resulted in life-altering injuries or fatalities. Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable on the road, and even a slow-moving vehicle can cause significant harm.

Awareness and education can help reduce these kinds of incidents. Here's what you should know:

  • Crosswalk Safety Matters: Many pedestrian crashes happen near or in crosswalks. Drivers are expected to stop when someone is crossing, but that doesn’t always happen. Pedestrians should always look both ways, even if they have the right of way, and drivers should slow down and remain alert, especially in busy city areas.
  • Left-Turn Risk at Intersections: Vehicles making left-hand turns pose a major risk to pedestrians, often because drivers are focused on oncoming traffic and fail to check for foot traffic. These accidents can occur in the blink of an eye and often result in serious injuries to those crossing the street.
  • Speed’s Impact on Injuries: Even a slight increase in vehicle speed greatly raises the risk of severe injury in a pedestrian crash. A pedestrian struck at 20 miles per hour has a far better chance of survival than at 30 or 40 miles per hour. Slower speeds give both drivers and pedestrians more time to react.
  • Distracted Driving and Walking: Phones are a major source of distraction for both drivers and pedestrians. A driver glancing at a screen can miss someone in a crosswalk, while a pedestrian looking down might step out into the road without checking for cars. Full attention from both sides can help prevent tragedy.
