Ann Arbor, MI - Pedestrian in Wheelchair Killed in Hit-and-Run on Huron St

Ann Arbor, MI (May 7, 2025) – A fatal crash involving a pedestrian in a wheelchair occurred just before midnight on May 5 in downtown Ann Arbor. Officers from the Ann Arbor Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of North Fourth Avenue and East Huron Street around 11:58 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 79-year-old Ann Arbor resident had been struck by a white SUV while crossing the street in a wheelchair. Emergency personnel from the Ann Arbor Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance also responded to the scene. Officers and medics rendered aid before the individual was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators say the victim was crossing East Huron Street at North Fourth Avenue when the traffic signal changed while he was still in the crosswalk. The eastbound SUV struck the man and then fled the scene. A short time later, a 22-year-old Ann Arbor woman turned herself in to authorities. She is currently being held at the Washtenaw County Jail. Investigators are exploring alcohol as a potential contributing factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the individual who lost his life in this crash.

Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI - Pedestrian in Wheelchair Killed in Hit-and-Run on Huron StPedestrian-involved crashes remain a serious concern in Michigan. According to 2022 state data, more than 2,000 pedestrian crashes occurred, resulting in over 160 fatalities. Intersections in busy cities like Ann Arbor can be particularly hazardous for pedestrians, especially those using wheelchairs or other mobility aids. Reduced visibility, distracted driving, and traffic signal timing all contribute to the risks.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by pedestrians in Michigan, particularly in downtown areas:

  • Vulnerable Road Users: Pedestrians, especially those using wheelchairs, face higher risks in crashes due to lack of protection. Even low-speed impacts can cause life-threatening injuries.
  • Signal Timing and Accessibility: Many traffic signals are not timed to accommodate individuals with mobility impairments. When a light changes too quickly, a pedestrian may still be crossing as traffic resumes.
  • Hit-and-Run Dangers: Drivers who flee the scene not only leave victims without aid but also hinder emergency response and investigation. These cases often carry serious legal consequences.
  • Alcohol and Driver Impairment: Impaired driving remains a top factor in fatal pedestrian crashes. Alcohol slows reaction time and impairs judgment, making intersections especially dangerous.
  • Urban Intersection Complexity: Multiple lanes, turning vehicles, and unclear signage in city environments can lead to confusion for both drivers and pedestrians.
