Jonesville, MI - Teen Killed, Two Others Hurt in Genesee Rd Crash

Jonesville, MI (May 7, 2025) – Tragedy struck Hillsdale County on the evening of May 5 when a crash claimed the life of one teenager and left two others with injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. near the intersection of Genesee Road and Bunn Road in Jonesville.

Michigan State Police troopers responded to the scene and discovered a 2006 Chevy Silverado that had left the roadway and struck a tree stump. The vehicle was carrying three teenage boys, all students at Homer Community Schools. Authorities confirmed that none of them had been wearing seatbelts.

The 16-year-old driver from Litchfield was traveling eastbound on Genesee Road when he lost control of the pickup truck on a curve. The crash resulted in both passengers being ejected from the vehicle. One of them, an 18-year-old from Jonesville, suffered severe injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, the teen was later pronounced dead.

The driver and the other 16-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries but declined medical care at the scene. Investigators do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

We hope the teens involved in this crash find healing, and we send our condolences to the family of the teen who lost his life.

Car Accidents in Michigan

Jonesville, MI - Teen Killed, Two Others Hurt in Genesee Rd CrashCar crashes continue to affect many families throughout Michigan every year. In 2022, Michigan State Police reported more than 293,000 traffic crashes across the state. Of those, over 70,000 led to injuries, and nearly 1,100 resulted in fatalities. Rural roads, like those in Hillsdale County, often pose greater risks due to limited lighting, higher speeds, and fewer safety barriers. Many of these accidents involve teenage drivers, who remain among the most at-risk groups on the road.

With that in mind, it's important to highlight key information about teenage driving accidents:

  • Inexperience on Rural Roads: Young drivers often lack the experience necessary to safely handle sudden changes in road conditions, especially on narrow or curvy rural roads. This can lead to misjudging turns or failing to recover from skids.
  • Seatbelt Use Among Teens: Teenagers consistently have the lowest rate of seatbelt use of any age group. This continues to be a major contributor to serious injuries and fatalities in single-vehicle crashes.
  • High-Risk Timeframes: Evening hours, particularly between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., are especially risky for young drivers. Reduced visibility and increased traffic during this period increase the chances of accidents.
  • Passenger Influence: The presence of other teenage passengers significantly raises the likelihood of a crash. Peer distractions can lead to reckless behavior or reduced focus on the road.
  • Lack of Defensive Driving Habits: Teens are less likely to practice defensive driving. Without habits like keeping a safe following distance or anticipating road hazards, they are more vulnerable to accidents.
