Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crashes in Michigan

Albee Twp., MI – Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on Fergus RdHit-and-run crashes remain a serious issue in Michigan, especially those involving pedestrians. In 2023, more than 17,000 hit-and-run accidents were reported in the state, many of which resulted in injuries or deaths. When a driver flees the scene, it delays medical response and leaves victims and their families with additional layers of trauma and unanswered questions.

These types of crashes bring many challenges to victims’ families, especially when the responsible driver is not immediately identified. Here are some things families should understand after a hit-and-run fatality:

  • Ongoing Police Investigations: Law enforcement typically uses witness statements, surveillance footage, and debris left at the scene to try and locate the fleeing driver. It’s crucial for the community to come forward with any tips or observations.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage: In many cases, families may be able to file a claim under their own or the victim’s uninsured motorist policy, which can help cover expenses even if the at-fault driver is not found.
  • Wrongful Death Options: Surviving family members may still be able to pursue a wrongful death claim. An attorney can help identify sources of compensation, including state funds or insurance policies, even in hit-and-run cases.
  • Community Impact and Support: Hit-and-run deaths often leave communities shaken. Victims are more than just statistics—they are parents, siblings, and neighbors. Local support and awareness are vital in helping prevent future tragedies.
  • Legal Support is Key: A legal team can assist in communication with investigators, file civil claims, and work to hold responsible parties accountable. They can also help ease the burden on families as they process grief and begin recovery.
