Car Accidents in Michigan

Davison Twp., MI – Personal Injury Crash at E Court St & N Irish RdCar crashes are a frequent occurrence on Michigan roads, with thousands of incidents reported each year across the state. According to the Michigan State Police, over 290,000 motor vehicle crashes occurred statewide in 2023, with nearly 1,100 fatalities and more than 50,000 injury-related cases. From rural roads to urban intersections, vehicle accidents remain one of the leading sources of injury across Michigan.

These incidents can lead to a range of challenges for victims and their families. Below are some common causes of crashes that continue to impact Michigan residents:

  • Distracted Driving: Activities like texting, adjusting the radio, or eating while behind the wheel are all distractions that take a driver’s attention off the road. In Michigan, distracted driving continues to be a key contributor to both minor and severe accidents, and new hands-free laws are being implemented to curb the trend.
  • Failure to Yield: Failing to yield the right of way at intersections or while merging is a frequent cause of crashes, especially during high-traffic hours. This often results in side-impact collisions, which can be particularly dangerous to passengers on the struck side of the vehicle.
  • Speeding and Reckless Driving: Driving over the speed limit or making unsafe lane changes places everyone on the road at greater risk. Speed-related accidents are more likely to involve serious injuries, especially on rural highways or roads with limited visibility.
  • Inclement Weather: Rain, snow, and ice all contribute to dangerous driving conditions. Many drivers in Michigan struggle with black ice or heavy snowfall during winter months, which increases the likelihood of losing control and crashing.
  • Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drug use behind the wheel remain persistent dangers. Despite increased public awareness, impaired driving continues to cause a significant portion of fatal and injury-related collisions throughout the state.
