Wellston, MI (May 20, 2025) – A heartbreaking incident unfolded on the afternoon of May 18 when a young girl lost her life following an off-road vehicle accident in Manistee County.

Michigan State Police based in Cadillac responded to the crash around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Spruce Street and Second Street in Wellston. Authorities say the 12-year-old driver had been traveling west along Second Street when she attempted to turn south onto Spruce Street. The young girl was pronounced dead at the scene. A 14-year-old passenger from Irons suffered serious injuries in the crash. Emergency personnel from the Norman Township Fire Department and Mobile Medical Response arrived to provide care, and the injured passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

According to the Michigan State Police, alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have played a role in this incident. Investigators are continuing to look into what may have contributed to the crash.

We offer our sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased victim.
