Motorcycle Accidents in Michigan

Saginaw, MI - Motorcyclist Injured in Weiss St and Bay Rd CrashMotorcycle crashes in Michigan continue to present serious safety concerns. In 2023, the state recorded over 3,000 motorcycle-involved crashes, resulting in more than 2,200 injuries and 120 fatalities, according to the Michigan State Police. Riders are particularly vulnerable due to the lack of protection compared to cars, making even minor crashes potentially life-altering.

Understanding the contributing factors in motorcycle accidents can help highlight why these incidents remain so severe. Below are a few key insights:

  • Limited Visibility: Motorcycles are smaller than most vehicles and can easily fall into a driver's blind spot. This limited visibility often leads to accidents at intersections or during lane changes, where drivers may fail to notice the motorcyclist in time.
  • High Risk of Ejection: In many crashes, motorcyclists are thrown from their bikes. Ejection can result in serious head trauma, fractures, or internal injuries. Wearing a helmet greatly reduces the risk of fatal head injuries, but cannot prevent all harm.
  • Road Hazards: Potholes, debris, wet pavement, or uneven surfaces that pose little threat to cars can cause a motorcyclist to lose control. These hazards are especially dangerous at higher speeds.
  • Driver Inattention: Many crashes are caused by car drivers who aren’t paying full attention. Texting while driving or being distracted by passengers or in-car technology continues to be a major factor in multi-vehicle motorcycle accidents.
  • Left-Turn Collisions: A frequent cause of motorcycle crashes occurs when a vehicle turns left in front of an oncoming motorcyclist. These accidents are often the result of misjudging the motorcyclist’s speed or failing to see them altogether.
