Grand Rapids Twp., MI - School Bus Rolls Over After Crash on East Beltline

Grand Rapids Twp., MI (May 29, 2025) – A crash involving a school bus and a sedan resulted in two people being hospitalized on the morning of Wednesday, May 28. The incident occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the East Beltline at Bradford Street, just north of Interstate 96.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the school bus—belonging to Thornapple Kellogg Schools—was turning north onto the East Beltline from westbound Bradford when it was struck on the left rear by a northbound sedan. The impact caused the bus to tip onto its side in the roadway.

One of the school staff members aboard the bus lost consciousness following the crash and was taken to the hospital with a head injury. The driver of the sedan also suffered a head injury along with minor cuts and was transported for medical care.

Initially, deputies reported that there were three staff members and four students on board. However, the school district later clarified that the bus was carrying three students, two aides, and the driver. Fortunately, none of the students sustained serious injuries, though they were evaluated at the scene.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Michigan

Grand Rapids Twp., MI - School Bus Rolls Over After Crash on East BeltlineBus-related crashes like this one are a reminder of the daily risks present on Michigan roads. According to state data, hundreds of school transportation-related accidents are reported each year, with a portion resulting in injuries. These incidents often happen during morning or afternoon commute hours when traffic is heavier and visibility may be compromised by sun glare or congestion.

When school buses are involved in crashes, there are several factors and outcomes that families and school districts may need to consider:

  • Injuries to School Staff and Students: While school buses are designed with safety features, crashes can still result in injuries, especially to aides or drivers not secured in their seats. Head injuries and cuts are common in rollovers due to sudden jolts and loose equipment.
  • Vehicle Design and Safety Limits: Buses are tall and can become unstable when struck near the rear or side, especially while turning. This makes them more susceptible to tipping during collisions with smaller vehicles.
  • Emotional Impact on Children: Even if students aren’t physically harmed, experiencing a crash can be traumatic. Schools often provide counseling resources to help children process the event and feel safe returning to the bus.
  • Delayed Communication or Misinformation: In the rush following an incident, early reports may differ from later confirmed details. It’s common for school districts and law enforcement to update the public as information is clarified.
  • Crash Scene Management: Large vehicles like buses and involved passenger cars require extensive cleanup. Towing, traffic rerouting, and investigation can significantly delay traffic and raise concerns for other drivers and pedestrians.
