Jackson, MI – Two Killed in Crash Involving Semi on I-94 at Airport Rd

Jackson, MI (June 10, 2025) – A deadly collision involving a box truck and a semi-truck hauling gravel occurred on the morning of June 9 along westbound Interstate 94 near Exit 137 at Airport Road. Authorities responded to the crash shortly after 9:06 a.m., according to the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety, with the Michigan Department of Transportation initially reporting the crash at 9:15 a.m.

Police stated that a large box truck rear-ended a gravel hauler semi-truck carrying two loaded trailers. The impact of the crash caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles and ruptured a fuel tank on the box truck, resulting in a spill across the roadway.

Tragically, the driver and passenger of the box truck — both young men in their 20s — were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released pending notification of their families. The semi-truck driver was not reported injured.

Due to the severity of the incident, I-94 westbound at Airport Road remained closed for nearly eight hours. Cleanup and recovery crews worked throughout the day to manage the fuel spill and clear the wreckage. The highway reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

Truck Accidents in Michigan

Jackson, MI – Two Killed in Crash Involving Semi on I-94 at Airport RdCommercial vehicle crashes in Michigan are among the most dangerous and complex on the roadways. Large trucks, including semis and gravel haulers, account for a significant number of fatal crashes each year due to their size, weight, and cargo. Data from Michigan traffic reports highlights that truck-involved crashes often lead to severe or fatal outcomes for those in smaller vehicles.

Here are some common factors and consequences seen in truck accident cases:

  • Rear-End Collisions with Trucks: Trucks take longer to stop, and when smaller vehicles collide into their trailers at high speeds, the result is often fatal. Box trucks and other commercial vehicles face visibility and reaction time limitations that make these types of crashes especially dangerous.
  • Hazardous Material Spills: Truck crashes can lead to spills of fuel or transported cargo, creating environmental hazards. Cleanup of these materials often prolongs road closures and complicates emergency response efforts.
  • Extended Road Closures: Due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles, even a single crash can block highways for hours. This causes delays not only for emergency responders but for thousands of motorists.
  • Higher Risk of Fatalities: When crashes involve commercial trucks, the occupants of smaller vehicles almost always face the greatest risk of injury or death. These cases often involve high speeds, heavy impact forces, and multi-vehicle chain reactions.
  • Insurance and Liability Complexities: Commercial trucking accidents often involve multiple insurers, employers, and regulatory agencies. Legal claims can become complicated quickly without experienced guidance.
  • Federal Safety Regulations: Trucks are governed by federal safety standards, including maintenance logs, driver hour restrictions, and cargo weight limits. A violation in any of these areas can be critical in building a case for compensation.

If your family has lost someone due to a trucking crash, it’s crucial to consult a wrongful death lawyer as soon as possible. Legal guidance can help ensure that surviving loved ones receive the compensation they are entitled to for funeral costs, loss of income, emotional suffering, and more.
