Erie Twp., MI (June 17, 2025) – A deadly collision took place on the night of June 14 in Erie Township when a dirt bike collided with a train at an active railroad crossing along Sterns Road. The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m., according to information released by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal incident unfolded as the dirt bike traveled westbound while the railroad crossing gates and warning signals were active. Officials say a northbound train was already moving through the area at the time. The dirt bike is believed to have crossed left of center approaching the tracks, maneuvering around the lowered gate before striking the train.
The victim, a 31-year-old Michigan man, was thrown from the dirt bike upon impact and died at the scene. Authorities confirmed that he was wearing a helmet. The crash occurred at a Norfolk Southern rail line, and investigators noted that alcohol is suspected to have played a role. The case remains under investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Train-related accidents, while less common than motor vehicle collisions, often result in severe or fatal injuries. In Michigan, railroad crossing incidents have led to multiple deaths and injuries each year, especially at intersections where drivers attempt to bypass crossing signals. These high-impact crashes frequently leave little chance for survival or recovery, highlighting the importance of adhering to all warning signals and barriers near train tracks.
