Northfield Twp., MI – Flint Man Killed After Dump Truck Tire Blowout Leads to Crash on US-23

Northfield Twp., MI (June 17, 2025) – A fatal accident occurred in Washtenaw County on the evening of June 16 when a dump truck veered off the road and struck a tree. Michigan State Police from the Brighton Post responded to the crash, which took place around 6:45 p.m. along southbound US-23 near the Northfield Rest Area.

According to troopers, the crash involved a 1994 Western Star dump truck traveling southbound when one of its tires blew out. This caused the driver to lose control, sending the vehicle off the right side of the highway, where it collided with a tree.

Emergency crews from the Ann Arbor Township and Northfield Township fire departments arrived to find the driver pinned inside the wreckage. Despite rescue efforts, the 47-year-old man from Flint was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have contributed to the accident.

The southbound lanes of US-23 were closed at North Territorial Road from 7:30 p.m. until around 9:45 p.m. as investigators examined the crash site. The case remains under investigation.

Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Truck Accidents in Michigan

Northfield Twp., MI – Flint Man Killed After Dump Truck Tire Blowout Leads to Crash on US-23Commercial truck accidents, while not as common as standard vehicle collisions, tend to be far more severe due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved. In Michigan, large vehicle crashes, including those involving dump trucks and other work vehicles, are responsible for numerous fatalities each year. Mechanical failure, including tire blowouts, is a leading cause in such accidents and often occurs without warning.

Tragic crashes involving commercial vehicles bring about specific concerns for victims and their families:

  • Tire Blowouts and Equipment Failure: Heavy trucks require frequent maintenance, especially on tires that carry immense weight. Blowouts can lead to catastrophic crashes, particularly at highway speeds. When failure occurs, it often leaves the driver with little or no time to react.
  • Driver Vulnerability in Rollovers: Dump trucks have a higher center of gravity, increasing the risk of tipping or rollovers. When control is lost, the driver is often left at serious risk for entrapment or fatal injury.
  • Delayed Emergency Response: Accidents involving pinned drivers require special equipment and coordination from multiple fire departments. These scenes can take longer to clear, impacting survival chances.
  • Mechanical Liability: If faulty maintenance or defective parts contributed to the crash, victims’ families may have grounds for legal action against a trucking company, repair shop, or manufacturer.
  • Work-Related Fatalities: When a commercial driver is killed on the job, their family may be eligible for specific benefits or wrongful death compensation related to workplace fatalities.
  • Need for Thorough Investigation: Commercial truck accidents involve more complex investigations, including logs, service records, and maintenance inspections. It’s vital to preserve this evidence early on.
