Fenton Township Crash

Grand Rapids, MI (June 25, 2025) – A fatal crash on westbound Interstate 96 led to major road closures and an investigation by Michigan State Police on the morning of Monday, June 23.

Authorities responded to the scene just past noon, near the 3 Mile Road overpass and Leonard Avenue, following reports of a serious accident. The crash occurred shortly after the I-196 split in Grand Rapids, causing the westbound lanes of the expressway to shut down for several hours.

Initial findings suggest the vehicle collided with the trailer of a semi truck. This caused the driver of the vehicle to lose control and veer off the road. The car then collided with the overpass support, fatally injuring the driver. The expressway remained closed until approximately 3 p.m. as investigators and emergency crews worked the scene. Speed is being considered a potential factor in the crash. Authorities have not released the name of the deceased individual pending notification of the family.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Car Accidents in Michigan

Grand Rapids, MI – One Killed in Fatal Truck Wreck on I-96Car crashes on Michigan roadways continue to pose significant risks, particularly on busy expressways like Interstate 96. According to the Michigan State Police, speeding remains one of the most prevalent causes of highway accidents. High-impact collisions involving large trucks and overpass supports often lead to tragic outcomes, especially when drivers lose control at high speeds.

These heartbreaking events highlight key concerns tied to expressway driving. Below are several considerations that can help shed light on why crashes like these occur:

  • High Speeds on Interstates: Interstate highways often see speeds of 70 miles per hour or more. At these rates, even a minor miscalculation or vehicle interaction can escalate quickly into a catastrophic crash. Maintaining safe distances and speeds is critical.
  • Lane Merging and Truck Interactions: When vehicles merge or pass near semi trucks, the risk of clipping or under-riding trailers increases. Drivers must be alert to the blind spots and slower maneuvering abilities of commercial vehicles.
  • Bridge and Infrastructure Hazards: Roadside structures, such as overpasses, can turn a crash into a fatal event when struck. Unlike grassy medians or shoulders, hitting concrete supports can produce deadly forces on impact.
  • Driver Distraction or Misjudgment: A moment of distraction, misjudgment of speed or space, or overcorrection after a near miss can send a vehicle off-course. These situations often lead to severe consequences.
  • Traffic Pattern Confusion Near Splits: Interstate splits, like the one between I-96 and I-196, may confuse unfamiliar drivers, increasing the likelihood of abrupt lane changes or overreactions.
