Erie Twp., MI (June 28, 2025) – A serious collision in Monroe County’s Erie Township sent six people to the hospital in critical condition after two vehicles crashed at the intersection of M-125 (South Dixie Highway) and Luna Pier Road. The incident happened around 2:27 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, shortly after officers had ended a police pursuit in the same area.
Authorities with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Erie Township Police had initially stopped a white 2013 Ford Focus near Suder Road and Dean Road for suspected reckless driving. Before the officer could make contact, the driver took off, prompting a short chase that was quickly called off due to the suspect’s dangerous driving behavior.
A short time later, the white Ford Focus sped north on South Dixie Highway, ignored a red traffic light at Luna Pier Road, and collided with a gray 2012 Ford Focus traveling westbound. The crash caused critical injuries to all four people inside the fleeing car and both occupants of the other vehicle. Multiple agencies, including Erie Township Fire Department, Monroe County Road Commission, Michigan State Police, Bedford Township Fire Department, MDOT, and Monroe Community Ambulance, responded to the scene and rushed the injured to hospitals in Toledo. Police warn that running from a traffic stop and driving recklessly often puts innocent lives at risk.
Our hearts go out to all six individuals injured in this accident. We hope each person makes a full recovery.
Motor vehicle accidents in Michigan remain a major concern for drivers and pedestrians alike. With thousands of collisions occurring each year, far too many people suffer injuries due to reckless or negligent behavior. In 2022 alone, Michigan reported over 293,000 traffic crashes, resulting in more than 70,000 injuries and 1,100 fatalities. While roads are regularly patrolled, crashes can still happen in an instant, highlighting the need for caution and responsible driving.
In light of this, it’s worth knowing what steps to take after an accident like this:
