Portage, MI (September 21, 2023) - Nick Armold, the chief of the Portage Department of Public Safety, stated that on Thursday morning, one of three 15-year-old girls heading to Loy Norrix High School was hit by a car.

Armold said that the girls had been walking on the sidewalk but had moved to the road's edge due to a sprinkler.

One of the teens, aged 15, was struck by a car driven by a 52-year-old man who was also from Kalamazoo and heading east on West Kilgore Road, according to the police. The police said she was brought to the hospital for treatment of a leg injury that was not life-threatening.

Authorities have claimed that speed contributed to the incident but that more investigation is still necessary. The Portage Police Department encourages anybody with information to contact them.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families.
